Stepwell of Adalaj





History


Construction of Stepwell of adalaj or popularly know as Adalaj ki vav started  in 16th century by Rana Veer Singh of Vaghela dynasty.  Purpose for building this stepwell was to provide water to the locals  who were facing acute water shortage and had to travel a lot for drinking water. Rana Veer Singh died in a battle against Mahmud Begada, ruler of Ahmedabad, After his death Mahmud Begada wanted to marry her widow Rani Rudabai, queen accepted the offer with a condition to complete the construction work in order to solve the water crisis.  Mahmud Begada agreed and completed the work, and later on Rani sacrificed her life by jumping into the stepwell instead of marrying the Sultan.













Architecture



Adalaj stepwell is a fusion of Hindu, Jain and Islamic culture and architecture.  An octagon shape five storey sandstone structure full of carvings and pillars, with steps going down adds beauty to the structure. Its a must see for those who love Photography, Art and architecture






How to reach



Distance -Its is situated between Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad, 18 Km from Ahmedabad and 10 Km from Gandhinagar by road.


Timings - Its open for visitors between 8 Am to 6 Pm,



Other attractions

There is a big garden and a temple adjacent to the monument.  If you are coming from Ahmedabad, you can spend some time at Sarkhej - Gandhinagar highway which is the biggest happening place in Modern Ahmedabad.  Also one can cover other places Like Sarkhej Roza and Thol bird sanctuary which are 15 & 25 km away from this place.  Morning or afternoon is best suited to visit this place as there may be a lot of traffic on SG Highway in the evening
