Kumbhalgarh Fort is a UNESCO world heritage site situated 102 km from Udaipur in Rajsamand District of Rajasthan. Fort is 3600 ft tall and 38Km long. It is also the biggest wall after Great Wall of China in the world.
Built by Rana Kumbha the ruler of Mewar in 15th century, this fort was built as the kingdom of Mewar with its capital at Chitorgarh was constantly under attack from muslim rulers from Delhi and Gujarat.
As per the folk tales, when Rana Kumbha decided to build this fort and started the construction, but the structure use to crumble down by the sunset.
After being advised for a human sacrifice, a person named Mer or Meher agreed for sacrificing his life on the condition that the fort should include his name too. Rana Kumbha agreed and the fort was named as Kumbhalmer which included the name of both Rana kumbha as well as Mer.
Kumbhalagarh is surrounded by forest and mountains, and because of beautiful picturesque and landscapes its one of the famous tourist locations in Rajasthan. Kumbhalgarh is full of resorts and luxurious hotels and its a popular destination for tourists from Gujarat.
If you are in Kumbalgarh you can visit the fort and enjoy the forest safari though gypsies which is run from the fort premises during the day time. Though the fort is in ruins and its not possible to visit most of the temples and other areas inside the fort on foot.
There are some treking and camping activities offered by many tour operators specially during the monsoon season.
Its a great experience for spending a day or two in this beautiful place.
